Kids Research is the research division of Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, located in Westmead in Sydney’s West and Randwick in Sydney’s East. Kids Research includes research undertaken by our students, affiliated academic staff and research staff at both of Sydney’s paediatric hospitals, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick.
1 in 20 children worldwide is born with a birth defect or genetic disease. Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI) is dedicated to advancing the treatment and prevention of childhood diseases, so every child has the opportunity for a healthy start to life. CMRI pioneered microsurgery, immunisations against lethal childhood illnesses and care for premature babies, all of which has improved the lives of countless Australian children over the last 58 years. Today, CMRI is the site of world-leading research in areas such as cancer, neurobiology, embryology and gene therapy.
As part of the University’s 2016-20 Strategic Plan, they will expand their presence in Western Sydney through the development by 2030 of a new multidisciplinary campus for 6,000 students at Westmead. An extra $50 million has been earmarked to fund new infrastructure in the Western Sydney region in the next five years, working towards a long-term target of $500 million over the next 15 years.
NSW Health Pathology operates more than 60 laboratories, has around 200 pathology collection services in NSW public hospitals and community health facilities, and conducts more than 61 million tests per year. NSW Health Pathology – ICPMR provides the diagnostic pathology services for Westmead Hospital and is involved in collaborative research in a range of national and international research programs, the Westmead Institute for Medical Research, the Marie Bashir Institute for Infectious Diseases and Biosecurity, NSW Health, the National Health and Medical Research Council, and many others.
